Chick-fil-A goes public with opposition to gay marriage

July 19, 2012

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said this week that his privately owned company is "guilty as charged" in support what he called the biblical definition of the family unit.

I literally just finished the article on Is Liberal Christianity Signing Its Own Death Warrant and was waiting for it to be "published" to the site. While waiting - I decided to do some web surfing and see what's new today. I came across an article in msnbc about the owner of Chick-fil-A and his opposition to gay marriage.

The last two pieces I did were both about the need for those who truly follow the Word of God to take a stand and say what we believe. The last one concluded with this quote from Rt. Rev. Mark Joseph Lawrence, the Episcopal bishop of South Carolina -

"I had an issue of conscience in which I believed that a line had been crossed in the church’s teachings, that I could no longer pretend that nothing significant had happened," Bishop Lawrence said, adding that he has no intention of leaving the church, despite the walkout.

“It’s not merely a matter of adapting the Church’s teachings about Jesus Christ, about salvation, about right and wrong to the culture," he said. "The culture is adrift in sexual confusion and obsession.”

...

"I still believe there is a broad and silent middle [within the Episcopal Church], I just don't know what it would take for them to stand up with moral courage and say, 'We don't believe this,'" Bishop Lawrence said.

My question at the end -
for all of us -

Is it time for you to stand up and say 'We don't believe this'?

And then - right away - I see this article on Dan Cathy and his stand on this issue.

In the short term - he may pay a price for this -

Gay rights advocates say they're surprised that the president of fast-food chain Chick-fil-A has taken a public position against same-sex marriage.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some backlash because of what he said.

Jesus said these things would happen .
See
Matthew 5:10 for one instance -

Mt 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

and John 15:18-25 for another -

Jn 15:18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’

With this as a backdrop -
I think it's important to look at what is happening here.

As I said earlier -
I expect some sort of backlash.
Traditionally - this is what happens.
Maybe even a boycott. to try to get him to back off his stand.

In the previous article - I also mentioned this verse from Deuteronomy 5:32-33 - where Moses was retelling what happened when He received the 10 Commandments from The Lord -

Dt 5:32 So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

As we would say today -
the gay rights advocates will try to get Dan Cathy to turn to the left -
to turn away from the path of God.

What will get lost - most likely - is this line from the company statement -

Chick-fil-A in a statement said it has a history of applying biblically-based principles to its business, and that it strives to treat everyone with honor, dignity and respect.

Again - it strives to treat everyone with honor, dignity and respect.

The apparent truth of this statement is evident in the surprise of the gay rights advocates that he took the stand he did. They didn't see this coming. There apparently had been no bias against them - no discrimination against them - nothing to give a clue of this.

But check out what Jesus said about loving our enemies in Matthew 5:43-48 -

Mt 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

There should not have been any bias against them -
there should not have been any persecution against them -
that's not the way we're supposed to behave.
Dan Cathy & Chick-fil-A seem to be doing exactly what Jesus said.

To put it another way -

Love your neighbor - hate your enemy
should be translated as
Love the sinner - hate the sin.

Just because we disagree with someone's beliefs or lifestyle isn't a reason to hate them - isn't a reason to discriminate against them - isn't a reason to do anything against them.

However - at the same time - their beliefs or lifestyles do not have to be something that we accept as being OK in God's view - and His view should be ours.

It's a fine line.

God loves them too - even if He doesn't like what they are doing.

As Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:1-7 -

1Ti 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men — the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

Again - that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.
Not just for the people we like -
not just for the people we agree with -
but for everyone.

However - having said that -
God also has that warning given by Moses -

Dt 5:32 So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

For those who stray -
eventually -
there will be a price to pay.

Notice above that Paul says - God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Yes - even those who don't follow His ways -
He loves them too -
and wants them to repent -
and go forth and sin no more -
and then they too can have the gift of salvation.

But - notice what Jesus says at the Last Supper - in Matthew 26:26-29 -

Mt 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

Mt 26:27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

"wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth" -
is now -
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

So - while truth and salvation are offered to all -
not everyone will accept it.

Those who don't like the stand taken by Dan Cathy will do whatever they will do.

For us - as Christians - our duty - to God -
is to continue to pray for them -
to not discriminate against them -
to love them -
but not to become one of them -
or to sacrifice our beliefs to placate them.

"I still believe there is a broad and silent middle ... , I just don't know what it would take for them to stand up with moral courage and say, 'We don't believe this,'" Bishop Lawrence said.

Dan Cathy stood up - Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said this week that his privately owned company is "guilty as charged" in support what he called the biblical definition of the family unit.

Where are you standing?
